Choose Your Coast Wisely
The North Coast (Nungwi & Kendwa) is less affected by dramatic low tides, meaning you can swim at any time of day. The East Coast (Kiwengwa & Matemwe) has long, idyllic beaches but suffers from heavy low tides where the sea recedes significantly. If swimming at any time matters to you, the north coast is the safer bet. If you prioritise dramatic scenery and water sports, the east coast is excellent.
Currency & Tipping
While everything at the resort is paid for on an all-inclusive plan, pack small denominations of US Dollars (printed after 2006) for tipping local drivers, guides, and hotel staff. It is always best to tip in cash, typically in US dollars or Tanzanian shillings. General guidance:
- Specialist safari guide: US$8–10 per guest per day
- All-inclusive resort staff: $1–2 per service interaction
- General accommodation staff: $5–10 per person per day
Bring $50–100 in small USD bills for tips during your resort stay. Cards are accepted at upscale hotels and all-inclusive resorts, but cash is needed for local markets, Stone Town shops, and day-to-day purchases.
Mandatory Travel Insurance for Zanzibar
Important: ZIC Insurance Required
As of October 1, 2024, all foreign visitors entering Zanzibar are required to purchase travel insurance directly from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) before arrival. The policy costs approximately $44 USD and is valid for up to three months. This is mandatory even if you already hold international travel insurance coverage. Your existing insurance is still strongly recommended for comprehensive medical and evacuation cover, but the ZIC policy is a separate immigration requirement.
Flights & Transfers
International flights are normally not included unless specifically quoted. Domestic Tanzania flights and safari-to-Zanzibar flights can be included depending on the package. Airport transfers are typically included in our packages, including arrival pickup, transfers between safari lodges as per itinerary, Zanzibar airport pickup and Zanzibar departure transfer.
Book Early for Peak Season
June to October is the main dry season and the most popular period for wildlife viewing. Zanzibar resort availability can be limited during peak months, especially for premium all-inclusive properties. Early booking is recommended for travel during July, August, and the December–January holiday period.
