5-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari Itinerary

A concentrated route through Tarangire, Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Exact game-drive routes are set by your guide based on current wildlife movement.

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park — Elephant Country

Your private safari begins in Arusha with pickup from your hotel or another agreed location. Depending on arrival arrangements, pickup can also be coordinated from Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Travel toward Tarangire National Park, one of northern Tanzania's most distinctive wildlife areas. After entering the park, begin your first game drive among baobab trees, open grassland and seasonal river habitats.

Tarangire is particularly known for elephants, but the park also supports buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, antelope, predators and abundant birdlife.

Lunch can be taken as a picnic or according to the final safari arrangement. Continue the game drive before proceeding to your accommodation.

Accommodation: Safari lodge or tented camp according to the selected accommodation level and confirmed booking.
Day 2

Tarangire to Central Serengeti — Into the Endless Plains

After breakfast, leave Tarangire and travel toward the Serengeti. The journey passes through the landscapes of northern Tanzania and the Ngorongoro Highlands before continuing toward the Serengeti.

Where appropriate, include a brief viewpoint and photo stop at the Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint.

Continue toward the Serengeti and enter through the appropriate gate based on the confirmed route. After entering Serengeti National Park, begin wildlife viewing.

The afternoon is dedicated to searching the plains and kopjes for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo and other wildlife. The exact wildlife-viewing route is determined by your professional safari guide based on seasonal conditions and current wildlife movements.

Overnight: Central Serengeti lodge or tented camp according to confirmed accommodation.
Day 3 · Full-Day Wildlife

Full-Day Serengeti Big Five Safari

This is the major wildlife day. Start early to take advantage of the cooler morning hours and increased wildlife activity. Explore the Serengeti with your private safari guide.

The day focuses on wildlife rather than rushing between destinations. Depending on the season and current wildlife movements, explore areas around Central Serengeti and the Seronera ecosystem.

Potential wildlife includes lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, gazelles and numerous bird species.

A packed lunch allows more time in the park. Continue game viewing throughout the day and return to camp in the evening.

Optional activity: A hot-air balloon safari may be offered where available. This is an optional extra, not included in the base package. Availability depends on location, season and provider schedules.
Day 4

Serengeti to Ngorongoro — Wildlife Viewing to the Crater Highlands

Enjoy an early morning game drive in the Serengeti before beginning the journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The morning drive provides another opportunity to search for wildlife before leaving the Serengeti.

Continue toward Ngorongoro. Depending on the final route and timing, enjoy a picnic lunch during the journey.

Arrive on the Ngorongoro highlands and continue to your accommodation near the crater rim or in the surrounding area according to the confirmed booking. The cooler highland environment creates a distinct contrast with the Serengeti plains.

Overnight: Ngorongoro-area lodge or tented camp according to the confirmed accommodation level.
Day 5 · Finale

Ngorongoro Crater Safari — Big Five Finale & Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a dedicated wildlife drive. The crater's enclosed ecosystem provides excellent opportunities to observe large mammals in a relatively compact area.

Search for lion, buffalo, elephant, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, hyena, antelope — and, with luck, black rhinoceros.

The Ngorongoro Crater is an important destination for travellers interested in the Big Five, particularly because of the possibility of encountering black rhino. Enjoy a picnic lunch during the crater experience according to park regulations and the final safari arrangement.

After the game drive, ascend the crater and continue toward Arusha. Expected arrival depends on road conditions, crater timing, wildlife activity and the final drop-off location.

Drop-off: Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport when the departure schedule is compatible. Airport drop-off depends on the confirmed flight time — we do not promise that an international flight can always be caught on the same day.

Wildlife

What Wildlife Can You Expect?

Wildlife sightings depend on season, location and natural conditions. Below is a realistic indication of what may be encountered on this itinerary.

Primary Big Five Targets

  • Lion — widespread; Serengeti well known for prides on open plains and around kopjes
  • Leopard — elusive; Central Serengeti's Seronera area is one of the more reliable regions
  • Elephant — Tarangire especially known; herds concentrate along the Tarangire River in dry season
  • African Buffalo — encountered in Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro; large herds common
  • Black Rhinoceros — Ngorongoro's enclosed ecosystem protects a small resident population

Other Likely or Possible Wildlife

  • Cheetah
  • Giraffe
  • Zebra
  • Wildebeest
  • Hippo
  • Hyena
  • Gazelles and antelope species
  • Warthog
  • Baboons and monkeys

Wildlife disclaimer: Wildlife is wild and sightings can never be guaranteed. Your guide will use current conditions, local knowledge and daily wildlife movements to maximise your opportunities. This itinerary is designed to maximise opportunities to encounter the Big Five — not to guarantee them.

When to Travel

Best Time for a 5-Day Big Five Safari

Tanzania offers wildlife viewing throughout the year. Each season has different characteristics, and the best timing depends on your priorities.

January – March

Good period for wildlife viewing in northern Tanzania, with seasonal conditions and calving-season opportunities depending on exact dates and location.

April – May

Green-season conditions, fewer visitors in some areas and potentially different safari dynamics. Weather can be wetter, and some roads may be more challenging.

June – October

Generally strong safari months, with dry conditions often making wildlife easier to locate around water sources. Migration movements vary through this period.

November – December

Short rains can occur, landscapes can become greener, and wildlife conditions remain worthwhile depending on the exact dates.

Great Migration on This Safari?

This 5-day safari can encounter migration activity when the route and travel dates align with the herds. The migration moves throughout the Serengeti ecosystem during the year, so we cannot guarantee a specific location or a Mara River crossing from a fixed itinerary.

Where your dates allow, we can adjust the itinerary around seasonal wildlife movements to improve the chances of encountering migration activity. If the Great Migration is a priority, let us know when you enquire — we will advise whether your travel dates are well suited.

Accommodation

Where Will You Stay?

Accommodation depends on the selected travel style and availability. Final properties are confirmed in your quotation.

Option 01

Mid-Range

Comfortable safari lodges and tented camps with private rooms or tents and private bathroom facilities. Well suited to travellers who want a comfortable, well-located base without moving into premium pricing.

Option 02

Luxury

Higher-end safari lodges and tented camps with upgraded accommodation, service and location. Often closer to prime wildlife areas, with more spacious rooms, upgraded dining and additional amenities.

Property selection: The specific property depends on your selected travel style, travel dates and availability. The properties confirmed for your itinerary will be listed clearly in your personalised quotation.

On Safari

Your Vehicle, Your Guide, Your Pace

A private safari changes how the trip works — from how long you spend at a sighting to how the day is paced.

Private 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser

  • Pop-up roof for elevated viewing and photography
  • Extended-body 4x4 with generous legroom
  • Window seat for every passenger
  • Onboard cooler box and drinking water
  • Charging ports for cameras and devices
  • Not shared with unknown travellers

Professional Safari Guide

  • One dedicated guide throughout the itinerary
  • Handles navigation, park logistics and lodge communication
  • Wildlife interpretation and birding knowledge
  • Reads animal behaviour and seasonal conditions
  • Works for you — not a group schedule
  • Prioritises wildlife welfare over the photograph

Your Pace, Your Priorities

Because the safari is private, your guide works for you rather than for a group. Priorities can be discussed in advance and adjusted where realistic — within park rules, opening and closing times, lodge schedules and driving distances.

Comfort on Long Drives

Unlimited drinking water, guide books and binoculars on request. Dust protection for camera equipment. Picnic lunches on full-day game drives. The day is paced so that the vehicle time never takes over the wildlife time.
