11-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari & Zanzibar Overview

Experience the very best of Tanzania on an unforgettable 11-day Big Five safari and Zanzibar beach holiday. Beginning in Arusha, this carefully designed journey takes you into the heart of Tanzania's legendary Northern Safari Circuit — exploring Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

The classic route runs Arusha → Tarangire → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Lake Manyara → Zanzibar. Each destination plays a distinct role. Tarangire opens the safari with elephant herds, baobab landscapes and the Tarangire River. The Serengeti delivers two full days across the widest wildlife-viewing window on the route. Ngorongoro closes the safari portion with the highest concentration of wildlife in a single enclosed area in Africa. Lake Manyara adds a Rift Valley ecosystem of groundwater forest, acacia woodland and lake shore. And then a short domestic flight swaps the savannah for Zanzibar's white-sand beaches and turquoise Indian Ocean waters.

It is the perfect combination of wildlife, adventure, culture and tropical relaxation in one Tanzania holiday. Because the itinerary is tailor-made, structure can be adjusted to your travel dates, wildlife priorities, accommodation preference, Zanzibar length and budget. Where the Great Migration is a priority, the Serengeti portion can be adapted around seasonal herd movements.

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Route: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) → Arusha
Approx. 45 min transfer · JRO to Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and meet your safari representative. Transfer to your hotel in Arusha, Tanzania's gateway to the Northern Safari Circuit. Relax after your journey and enjoy a safari briefing with your guide before your adventure begins.

What's covered on Day 1

  • Airport pickup at JRO
  • Private transfer to your Arusha accommodation
  • Rest and time to adjust after international travel
  • Safari briefing with your guide over dinner
Overnight: Arusha
Meals: Dinner and breakfast (per property).
Day 2

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Route: Arusha → Tarangire National Park
Approx. 120 km · plus game-drive driving inside the park

After breakfast, depart Arusha for Tarangire National Park. Known for its enormous elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and seasonal wildlife concentrations, Tarangire offers an exceptional introduction to Tanzania's wildlife. Enjoy a full-day game drive searching for elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and other wildlife.

Wildlife highlights

  • Large elephant herds along the Tarangire River
  • Baobab-dotted landscapes
  • Lions, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and antelope
  • Rich birdlife typical of riverine and open woodland
Overnight: Tarangire / Karatu area
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 3

Full-Day Tarangire National Park

Route: Tarangire National Park — full-day game viewing
All-day game drive · typically 60–120 km inside the park

Spend another day exploring Tarangire's diverse landscapes and wildlife. The additional time allows you to enjoy a more relaxed safari experience, follow wildlife activity and explore different areas of the park. Tarangire is particularly rewarding for elephant sightings and wildlife photography, with its distinctive baobab-studded scenery.

Why two days in Tarangire

  • More time to watch elephant family groups
  • Opportunity to explore different zones of the park
  • Better chances of leopard and lion sightings on secondary tracks
  • Reduced pressure on individual game drives
Overnight: Tarangire / Karatu area
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner.
Day 4

Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

Route: Tarangire → Ngorongoro Highlands → Serengeti National Park
Approx. 150–200 km depending on gate · one of the longer transfer days

Leave Tarangire and travel toward the legendary Serengeti National Park. The journey takes you through spectacular northern Tanzania landscapes before reaching the vast plains of the Serengeti. Enjoy an afternoon game drive as you begin exploring one of Africa's greatest wildlife ecosystems.

Wildlife highlights

  • Wildlife viewing as you enter the Serengeti ecosystem
  • Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and resident plains species
  • Predators where conditions allow

All-day game drive · typically 60–120 km inside the park

Wake up in the heart of the Serengeti for a full day of wildlife exploration. Search the plains for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and hyenas. The Serengeti's vast ecosystem provides excellent opportunities to observe predators and prey in their natural environment.

Wildlife highlights

  • Leopards — usually in riverine trees where present
  • Cheetahs — where conditions and open terrain allow
  • Elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and hyena

Full-Day Serengeti Safari (Day 2)

Route: Serengeti National Park — second full day of game viewing
All-day game drive · may cover a different sector of the park

Continue your Serengeti adventure with another full day dedicated to wildlife viewing. With more time in the park, your guide can adapt the day's route according to wildlife activity, seasonal conditions and your interests. Depending on your travel dates, the itinerary can be positioned toward the most relevant Serengeti area for the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Why two full days make a difference

  • Time to explore multiple sectors rather than staying in one zone
  • More chances to find predator activity — lions, leopards, cheetahs
  • Better photography opportunities at golden hour
  • Flexibility to follow seasonal wildlife movement
  • Less pressure to rush through the park
Overnight: Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner.
Note: The Great Migration moves through the ecosystem during the year and does not sit in one fixed location.

Approx. 150–180 km depending on gate and route

Enjoy a final Serengeti game drive before beginning your journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Route: Ngorongoro Crater — full-day game viewing
All-day game drive inside the crater · plus descent and ascent

Descend into the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater for a full day of wildlife viewing. The crater's enclosed ecosystem supports an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. Look for lions, buffalo, elephants, hippos, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas and, with luck, the rare black rhinoceros. The combination of wildlife and dramatic volcanic scenery makes Ngorongoro one of the defining experiences of a Tanzania safari.

Wildlife highlights

  • Lions and buffalo on the crater floor
  • Elephants — often older bulls with large tusks
  • Hippos in the crater's freshwater areas
  • Black rhino opportunity where conditions allow
  • Numerous bird species, including flamingos and raptors

Continue to Lake Manyara National Park, set beneath the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment. Explore the park's forests, woodland and lakeshore habitats while searching for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hippos, monkeys and other wildlife. Lake Manyara is also known for occasional sightings of tree-climbing lions and seasonal concentrations of flamingos.

Wildlife highlights

  • Tree-climbing lions where present
  • Large baboon troops in the groundwater forest
  • Flamingos and waterbirds along the lake shore

Why This Length

Why Choose an 11-Day Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Holiday?

Eleven days gives you enough time to experience Tanzania beyond a short safari. You can explore several of the country's most famous wildlife destinations before ending your journey on Zanzibar's tropical coastline. The combination offers:

  • Wildlife — Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara
  • Adventure — daily game drives and wildlife tracking
  • Culture — Maasai and Swahili experiences where included
  • Scenery — baobabs, Rift Valley landscapes, Serengeti plains and Ngorongoro Highlands
  • Relaxation — Zanzibar beaches and Indian Ocean experiences

Compared with shorter safaris, the 11-day itinerary is used in three specific ways. First, an extra day in Tarangire, allowing you to explore the park at a more relaxed pace. Second, two full days in the Serengeti instead of one. Third, a Zanzibar extension that lets you decompress after the safari before flying home.

Many travellers extend the Zanzibar portion to 3–5 nights for a full beach holiday. This is easy to add when you enquire and can be built into the same itinerary.

Big Five Focus

Can You See the Big Five in Tanzania?

The Northern Circuit offers some of Tanzania's best opportunities to encounter the African Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhinoceros. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Target Species · 01

Lion

Why it is sought after: Lions are the classic flagship species of an African safari and one of the most engaging large predators to observe in family groups.

Where it may be encountered: Serengeti is the strongest location on this route, and lions are also present in Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro. Prides often sit on open plains, around kopjes, or near water sources.

Sightings are not guaranteed. Lions move with prey and conditions.

Target Species · 02

Leopard

Why it is sought after: Leopards are one of the most difficult and rewarding sightings on a safari — solitary, powerful and often seen resting in trees.

Where it may be encountered: Central Serengeti's Seronera area is one of the more reliable locations in northern Tanzania. Tarangire and Lake Manyara also support leopards.

Sightings are not guaranteed. Leopards are naturally elusive and often rest out of view.

Target Species · 03

Elephant

Why it is sought after: Elephants are a signature species of Tanzania's northern parks and one of the most engaging animals to watch in family groups.

Where it may be encountered: Tarangire is the standout park for elephants on this route, particularly in the dry months when herds concentrate along the Tarangire River. Elephants are also regularly seen in the Serengeti and, sometimes, in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Sightings are not guaranteed at any single location.

Target Species · 04

Buffalo

Why it is sought after: Buffalo are a robust, heavily built species often seen in large herds, and they are one of the more consistently encountered Big Five animals.

Where it may be encountered: Buffalo occur throughout the Northern Circuit and are commonly seen in Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Sightings are not guaranteed at close range.

Target Species · 05

Black Rhinoceros

Why it is sought after: The black rhino is the rarest of the Big Five and one of the most difficult to see anywhere in East Africa. Any sighting is a genuine privilege.

Where it may be encountered: Ngorongoro Crater protects a small resident population and is one of the more realistic places in northern Tanzania to look for the species.

Sightings are not guaranteed. The resident population is small, and rhinos are often at distance when seen.

Wildlife disclaimer: This itinerary is designed to maximise opportunities to encounter the Big Five — not to guarantee them. Wildlife sightings depend on season, weather, current conditions and animal behaviour. Your guide will use local knowledge and daily wildlife movements to plan each game drive as productively as possible.

Other Wildlife

Other Wildlife You May See

Beyond the Big Five, a Tanzania Northern Circuit safari offers a very wide range of species. The list below is a realistic indication of what may be encountered — never a guarantee.

Predators & Larger Mammals

  • Cheetah
  • Hyena
  • Jackal
  • Hippo
  • Warthog
  • Baboons

Herbivores & Antelope

  • Wildebeest
  • Zebra
  • Giraffe
  • Gazelle (Thomson's and Grant's)
  • Eland
  • Oryx
  • Impala
  • Monkeys where present
  • Other antelope species
Destination Focus

Why Visit Tarangire National Park?

Tarangire is often the opening park on a Northern Circuit safari, and it earns its place. The park is defined by three things: elephants, baobabs and the Tarangire River.

Elephant herds are the park's best-known draw. During the dry months, large numbers of elephants gather along the Tarangire River, which becomes an important water source as the surrounding areas dry out. The park is dotted with ancient baobab trees — large, distinctive trees that define its visual character and make it one of the more photogenic ecosystems on the route.

Wildlife is diverse and different from what you will see in the Serengeti. Tarangire supports buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, lions and a wide range of predators and antelope. Birdlife is strong, especially in the riverine areas. On an 11-day safari, the two-night Tarangire portion adds ecological variety and lets you enjoy the park without rushing.

You can read more on our Tarangire National Park page.

Destination Focus

Why Visit Lake Manyara National Park?

Lake Manyara National Park is smaller than Tarangire or the Serengeti, but it is one of the most ecologically varied stops on the Northern Circuit. The park sits below the dramatic escarpment of the Great Rift Valley and packs several distinct habitats into a compact area — groundwater forest, open woodland, lake shore, and cliffs.

The park is known for its tree-climbing lions, which rest in the branches of acacia and fig trees where they occur. This behaviour is unusual across Africa, and Lake Manyara is one of the more reliable locations to look for it. Large baboon troops are also common in the groundwater forest, and hippo pods are visible along the lake edge.

Birdlife is exceptional. When water levels are right, thousands of flamingos and other waterbirds gather along the lake shore. The park is also a strong location for raptors, kingfishers and forest species that are harder to find in the more open parks.

You can read more on our Lake Manyara page.

Destination Focus

Why Spend Two Full Days in the Serengeti?

The Serengeti is the central experience of this safari. It is enormous — the wider ecosystem stretches across thousands of square kilometres — and wildlife is not evenly distributed across it. Two full game-drive days let your guide explore different sectors of the park rather than concentrating on the immediate area around your camp.

What two full days provide

  • Time to explore multiple areas rather than staying in one zone
  • More chances to find predator activity — lions, leopards, cheetahs
  • More opportunities for wildlife photography, especially at golden hour
  • Room to follow seasonal wildlife movements in the ecosystem
  • Less pressure to rush through the park

Day 5 is usually spent around the area closest to your camp, focusing on general wildlife viewing. Day 6 gives you the option to move further out if the guide has information suggesting a better area. If you are travelling during the Great Migration window, the Serengeti routing can be adapted to follow seasonal herd movement.

Explore our Serengeti safaris for more detail.

Destination Focus

Why Visit the Ngorongoro Crater?

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and one of the most distinctive wildlife environments in Africa. Its enclosed nature makes it a genuinely different experience from the open plains of the Serengeti.

Wildlife is concentrated on the crater floor, which makes it easier to see a wide variety of species in a single morning. Lions, buffalo, elephants, hippos, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and a range of antelope are all common. The crater also protects a small resident population of black rhinoceros.

On this 11-day itinerary, the crater is given a full day — a slow descent, a full morning of game viewing, a picnic lunch on the crater floor, and a relaxed afternoon return to the rim. The combination of wildlife and dramatic volcanic scenery makes Ngorongoro one of the defining experiences of a Tanzania safari.

You can read more on our Ngorongoro Crater page.

Why Combine

Why Combine a Tanzania Safari with Zanzibar?

A Tanzania safari gives you adventure. Zanzibar gives you time to slow down. Together, they create a complete Tanzania holiday — from elephants and lions on the Serengeti plains to white-sand beaches on the Indian Ocean.

The combination works well for three reasons.

First, it fits the natural rhythm of a long-haul trip. After a safari that often involves early starts and long game drives, a few days of beach relaxation lets you decompress before the flight home rather than going straight from camp to airport.

Second, Zanzibar is easy to reach. Domestic flights connect Arusha and Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar in around 90 minutes. There is no need for a separate long-haul leg.

Third, Zanzibar is a genuinely interesting destination in its own right. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the spice farms are historically significant, and the diving and snorkelling around the island are some of the best in East Africa.

For honeymooners, families and travellers who want both wildlife and beach on a single trip, this is one of the most popular itinerary structures we operate. See our Safari & Zanzibar packages and Zanzibar holidays for more detail.

Island Experiences

Zanzibar Beach & Island Experiences

Zanzibar offers a wide range of optional experiences beyond beach relaxation. Availability depends on your hotel location, travel dates and preferences.

Stone Town Tour

Discover Zanzibar's historic streets, architecture, markets and Swahili heritage. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a complex history shaped by Swahili, Arab, Indian and European influences.

Spice Farm Tour

Explore Zanzibar's famous spice-growing traditions. Guided visits typically include tastings of vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and other spices, along with an overview of the island's trading history.

Snorkelling & Diving

Discover the coral reefs and marine life surrounding Zanzibar. Popular sites include Mnemba Atoll, where visibility and reef quality are strongest. Dive shops operate from most resort areas.

Sunset Dhow Cruise

Enjoy a traditional dhow sailing experience along the Zanzibar coastline. Most cruises depart in the late afternoon and return after sunset. Suitable for couples, families and small groups.

Sandbank Excursions

Day trips to tidal sandbanks off the coast, with snorkelling, swimming and picnic lunches. Availability depends on tides and weather.

Jozani Forest

Visit the home of the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey. Jozani Forest is the largest remaining natural forest on the island and a good half-day trip from most beach areas.

Beach Relaxation

Spend your final days simply enjoying Zanzibar's beaches and Indian Ocean atmosphere. Different coastlines offer different conditions — the east coast has tidal beaches, the north is calmer, and the south is quieter.

Cultural & Culinary Experiences

Swahili cooking classes, spice-based dinners, and locally guided cultural walks can be arranged at most resorts. These are a good way to spend a half-day on the island.

Route Options

Which 11-Day Safari & Zanzibar Route Is Best for You?

The itinerary can be structured in different ways depending on your season, priorities and travel dates. The final route depends on availability and wildlife movements.

Option 01

Classic Route

Arusha · Tarangire · Serengeti · Ngorongoro · Lake Manyara · Zanzibar

Best for: First-time Tanzania safari travellers and travellers focused on the classic Northern Circuit. Covers four major ecosystems with a Zanzibar finish.

Option 02

Migration-Focused Route

Arusha · Serengeti / seasonal migration area · Ngorongoro · Zanzibar

Best for: Travellers whose primary goal is following the Great Migration. Routing depends on your travel dates and current herd locations.

Option 03

Extended Zanzibar Route

Arusha · Tarangire · Serengeti · Ngorongoro · Zanzibar (4–5 nights)

Best for: Travellers who want a proper beach holiday after the safari. This is the most common adjustment we make to the standard 11-day itinerary.

Route availability: Not every route is available for every travel date. The final route depends on travel dates, park conditions, accommodation availability and your priorities. Tell us what matters most when you enquire and we will advise which option suits your trip.

Seasonal Wildlife

Great Migration Tanzania Safari

If your travel dates coincide with the Great Migration, your itinerary can be adjusted to focus on the areas most relevant to seasonal herd movements. The migration is constantly changing throughout the year.

  • January – March: Southern Serengeti and Ndutu can be important for calving and predator activity.
  • April – May: Green-season conditions and rainfall influence wildlife movement.
  • June – October: Western and Northern Serengeti can become important depending on rainfall and herd movements.
  • November – December: Herds generally move back toward the southern Serengeti as seasonal rains develop.

What we cannot guarantee: River crossings depend on water levels, herd movement and timing on the day. Migration locations change from year to year. A safari cannot guarantee that the herds will be in any specific place at a specific time.

For travellers specifically planning around the migration, travel dates are essential when selecting the best route. Read more on our Great Migration safaris page.

When to Travel

Best Time for an 11-Day Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar

Timing by Market

Best Time by Country of Origin

School holiday windows and public holiday periods differ by country. Here is a short guide for our main source markets.

Traveling from the USA

June to August aligns with the US summer school break and dry-season conditions. December to early January suits winter-break family travel. Shoulder months (late May, early November) offer fewer crowds and often better availability.

Traveling from the UK & Ireland

July and August are the peak holiday window but also the busiest. Late May half-term, October half-term and Easter are quieter alternatives. Christmas and New Year are increasingly popular for safari + Zanzibar.

Traveling from Germany, Austria & Switzerland

July and August suit the long summer break. Autumn half-term (October) offers dry conditions with fewer crowds. February is well suited to travellers chasing the calving season.

Traveling from France, Belgium & the Netherlands

July and August for the summer holidays. April/May and October half-terms are quieter windows. The Netherlands also sees strong interest in the dry-season July–October window.

Traveling from Canada

July and August align with the Canadian summer break. March break can work for calving-season itineraries. Many Canadian travellers prefer the shoulder months for better lodge availability.

Traveling from Australia & New Zealand

Australian school holidays (mid-June to mid-July, and mid-December to late January) align with two different safari seasons. The December–January window is popular for safari + Zanzibar combinations.

Traveling from the Middle East

Many travellers prefer June–September to escape summer heat, or the cooler window of December–February. Direct flight options from Doha and Dubai make short safari trips feasible.

Traveling from Southern Africa

Regional travellers often visit during South African school holidays, which overlap with strong dry-season wildlife viewing.

On Safari

What Is a Typical Safari Day Like?

A general rhythm for a day on safari. Actual schedules depend on wildlife, weather, park rules and location.

Early Morning

Early start, often before sunrise. Light breakfast or coffee at camp or lodge, then a morning game drive timed to make the most of the cooler hours and active wildlife.

Mid-Morning to Noon

Continued wildlife viewing, then a full breakfast or brunch stop. On some days this is served at camp; on others it may be a bush breakfast where the itinerary allows.

Afternoon

Lunch and rest during the hottest part of the day, or a continued drive with a packed lunch where the itinerary calls for it. As temperatures cool, wildlife becomes active again.

Evening

Return to camp or lodge before park closing times. Dinner, overnight, and where appropriate a discussion with your guide about the following day's route and priorities.

Schedules vary according to park regulations, wildlife activity, guest preferences, travel distance and accommodation location. On a private safari, the day can be paced around your priorities.

Practical

How Much Driving Is Involved?

Northern Tanzania safaris involve road travel between parks. This is normal for the region and is one of the honest trade-offs of any Northern Circuit itinerary.

The route is designed to balance transfer time with game-drive time. On the 11-day itinerary, the longer transfer days are Tarangire to Serengeti (Day 4), Serengeti to Ngorongoro (Day 7), and the return from Lake Manyara toward Arusha (Day 9). Days spent fully inside Tarangire (Day 3), the Serengeti (Days 5, 6), the crater (Day 8), and Lake Manyara (Day 9) involve very little non-game-drive transit.

A private safari gives you more flexibility on transfer days — more rest stops, longer wildlife stops, or a picnic stop at a scenic point. Where the itinerary includes a long transfer day, your guide will pace the day so it does not become a pure driving day.

Approximate day-by-day distances are listed on each itinerary card above. Exact driving times are not published because they depend on road conditions, season, gate openings and the specific accommodation confirmed.

Logistics

Where Does the Safari Start and End?

This 11-day Tanzania safari starts in Arusha, Tanzania, and ends on Zanzibar at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) for your onward international flight.

Arrival

  • Standard: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) — met on arrival and transferred to your Arusha hotel.
  • Alternative: Arusha — travellers already in Tanzania can begin the safari directly from their accommodation.

Departure

  • Standard: Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ) on Day 11.
  • Alternative: Some travellers return to Arusha or Kilimanjaro for their international flight if Zanzibar is used as a mid-trip destination. We can discuss this when you enquire.

Airport transfers should be coordinated with your international flight times. Tell us your arrival and departure details when you enquire so we can plan the transfer window accurately.

Getting Here

International Flight Connections to Tanzania

Tanzania is served by Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Arusha, and Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam. Most safari arrivals use JRO. Zanzibar has its own international airport (ZNZ).

From the USA

Common routes connect through Amsterdam (KLM), Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (Emirates), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) or Nairobi (Kenya Airways). Total travel time is typically 16 to 22 hours.

From the UK & Ireland

KLM via Amsterdam is the most common one-stop route from the UK. Alternatives include Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Kenya Airways via Nairobi, and Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa.

From Germany, Austria & Switzerland

KLM via Amsterdam, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Qatar Airways via Doha and Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa are all well used from German-speaking Europe.

From France, Belgium & the Netherlands

KLM operates regular connections from Amsterdam with onward links to Kilimanjaro. From France and Belgium, connect through Amsterdam, Paris, Doha, Dubai or Istanbul.

From Canada

Connect via Amsterdam, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Addis Ababa or Nairobi. Some travellers route through a US hub first for better flight timing.

From Australia & New Zealand

Most itineraries connect through Doha, Dubai, Addis Ababa or Nairobi. Travel time is typically 20 to 28 hours with one or two connections.

From the Middle East

Qatar Airways via Doha and Emirates via Dubai offer the most direct routings. FlyDubai also serves Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

Domestic & Regional Connections

Within Tanzania, domestic flights connect Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and the main safari airstrips. These are useful for safari + Zanzibar combinations.

Suitability

Who Is This 11-Day Tanzania Safari Best For?

The itinerary can be adapted to suit a range of travellers. Suitability depends on the pace you want and the priorities of your group.

First-Time Tanzania Visitors

Eleven days covers the classic Northern Circuit plus a Zanzibar extension — a strong introduction to the country.

Couples

A private format suited to couples who want wildlife, culture and beach in one trip.

Honeymooners

The combination of safari adventure and Zanzibar relaxation makes this a strong honeymoon itinerary.

Families

Suitable for families with children when the pace is adapted. See our family safaris.

Friends & Small Groups

Well suited to small groups travelling together. Group size affects vehicle and accommodation arrangements.

Wildlife Enthusiasts & Big Five Travellers

Four major ecosystems, two full Serengeti days, a full crater day, and a Zanzibar finish.

Photographers

Strong photography windows across four ecosystems plus golden-hour Serengeti sessions.

Great Migration Travellers

Travel dates can be aligned with seasonal migration movements where relevant.

Safari + Beach Travellers

Designed specifically for travellers who want wildlife and beach in a single holiday.

Duration Question

Is an 11-Day Safari Enough?

Yes. Eleven days is a strong duration for both the Northern Circuit and a Zanzibar extension. This itinerary includes:

  • Arrival and briefing time in Arusha
  • Two nights in Tarangire with a full game-drive day
  • Two full Serengeti game-drive days
  • A full Ngorongoro Crater day
  • Lake Manyara on the return leg
  • A Zanzibar beach extension before departure

For travellers with additional time, longer safaris add specific value: 12–13 days for a full safari + extended Zanzibar combination, 14 days for deeper Northern Circuit coverage or a safari combined with a Kilimanjaro climb.

Many travellers also choose to extend the Zanzibar portion to 4–5 nights. This is easy to arrange and gives you a proper beach holiday rather than a taste of the island.

Comparing Durations

Travellers who want both wildlife and a beach decompression

Honeymooners and travellers who want more depth and more beach time
Practical Information

What Should I Pack?

A short planning guide for both the safari and Zanzibar portions. Full details are provided in your pre-travel pack after booking.

Safari Clothing

  • Lightweight neutral clothing — khaki, olive, beige
  • Warm layer for early morning and evening drives
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Avoid dark blue and black where possible

Safari Essentials

  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera with spare batteries and memory cards
  • Binoculars (highly recommended)
  • Power bank for charging on the move
  • Small day bag for game drives

Zanzibar Additions

  • Swimwear
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Light beach clothing
  • Sandals or water shoes
  • Light rain jacket for occasional showers

Soft-sided duffel bags are recommended for the safari portion. The domestic flight to Zanzibar has stricter luggage limits — typically 15 kg per person on light aircraft. We will confirm applicable limits for your itinerary.

Practical Information

Practical Tanzania Travel Information

Quick answers to the logistics questions that come up when planning a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday from abroad.

Visa & Entry

Most visitors require a Tanzania visa. It can usually be obtained as an e-visa before travel or on arrival at major entry points. Rules and fees change — always confirm the current requirement for your nationality before booking flights.

Currency

The local currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). US dollars are widely accepted for safari payments and larger purchases. Smaller denominations (USD 1s, 5s and 10s) are useful for tips. ATMs are available in Arusha, Stone Town and other towns, but not inside the parks.

Language

Swahili and English are the two official languages. English is widely spoken in the tourism sector and by all our guides. On Zanzibar, Swahili is widely spoken and English is common in tourist areas.

Health

Check current recommendations with a travel clinic for routine vaccinations and, where applicable, yellow fever and malaria prophylaxis. Both safari areas and Zanzibar have malaria risk. Bring personal medication in original packaging.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and is required for most safari bookings. Cover should include medical treatment, emergency evacuation and trip cancellation or interruption.

Time Zone

Tanzania operates on East Africa Time (EAT), UTC+3. There is no daylight saving adjustment during the year.

Electricity & Connectivity

Standard power is 230V / 50Hz with UK-style Type G sockets. A universal adapter is useful. Mobile coverage is reasonable in towns and at many lodges. Wi-Fi is available at most lodges, camps and Zanzibar hotels, but is slower and less reliable than in cities.

Culture & Etiquette

Dress modestly in towns and villages, especially on Zanzibar where the population is predominantly Muslim. Cover shoulders and knees away from the beach. Ask before photographing people. Tipping is customary for guides, drivers and camp staff.

Ethical Safari

Responsible Safari Practices

Wildlife watching should never come at the expense of the wildlife. This is how we operate on every safari we run.

We Do Not Chase Animals

Sightings are observed from a respectful distance, at the animal's pace. If an animal moves away, we do not follow at speed or cut off its path.

We Do Not Off-Road Unnecessarily

Where park rules prohibit driving off designated tracks, we follow them without exception. Off-road driving damages fragile habitats and disturbs wildlife.

We Do Not Feed Wildlife

Not by guides, not by guests, not at any point. Feeding wild animals alters their behaviour and creates long-term problems for the ecosystem.

We Do Not Disturb Predators

Resting lions, hunting cheetahs and nursing leopards are observed quietly and briefly. We do not crowd kills or interfere with a hunt.

We Respect Park Rules

Speed limits, opening and closing times, restricted zones and permit requirements are non-negotiable. Our guides are trained to observe them consistently.

We Work With Local Communities

Where the itinerary includes a village or cultural visit — in Tanzania or Zanzibar — we work with partners who receive direct benefit.

On Safari

Safari Vehicle & Game Drive Experience

Two elements shape the quality of every game drive more than any other: your guide and your vehicle.

Vehicle

4x4 Safari Vehicle

  • Purpose-built 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof where applicable
  • Large windows and elevated viewing position
  • Charging options depend on vehicle — confirmed in your quotation
  • Comfortable seating for the confirmed group size
  • Not shared with unknown travelers on a private safari
Guide

Experienced Safari Guide

  • One dedicated guide throughout the safari portion
  • Handles navigation, park logistics and lodge communication
  • Wildlife interpretation, birding knowledge and safe distances around animals
  • Reads seasonal conditions, tracks and current wildlife movement
  • Works for you — not a fixed group schedule

Why a 4x4 Matters

A 4x4 vehicle is useful for wildlife viewing, photography and rough park roads. The higher driving position improves visibility over grass and bushes, the pop-up roof allows elevated shooting while staying inside, and the vehicle handles the rougher roads of the Northern Circuit reliably.

Game Drive Experience

On a private safari, the day is paced around your priorities. Priorities can be discussed in advance and adjusted where realistic — within park rules, opening and closing times, lodge schedules and driving distances.

Photography

Wildlife Photography on an 11-Day Safari

The eleven-day itinerary offers strong conditions for wildlife photography, particularly because of the two full Serengeti days and the full crater day. Zanzibar also offers its own photography opportunities — Stone Town architecture, spice farm details, dhow sails and beach sunsets.

Best times for wildlife photography

  • Early morning light (roughly the first 90 minutes after sunrise) — soft light, low angle, active wildlife.
  • Late afternoon into golden hour — warm light, good silhouettes, predator activity often resumes.
  • Overcast days — flat, even light that can work well for close-up portraits.

Practical considerations

  • Long lens: 200–400mm covers most wildlife situations; 500mm or longer gives reach for distant predators and rhinos.
  • Dust protection: Bring a rain cover or a large plastic bag for your camera between shots on safari.
  • Batteries and memory: Bring spare batteries and more memory than you think you'll need.
  • Binoculars: Complement long-lens photography by letting you scan quickly without lifting the camera.
  • Zanzibar: Bring a wider lens for Stone Town architecture and landscape shots. Respect local customs regarding photographing people.

If photography is a priority, tell us when you enquire. Where possible, we can align game-drive timing and vehicle positioning around photography windows.
